REEEP has co-authored a paper on open data and “crowdsourcing” showing that these approaches can help developing countries to make crucial decisions on energy planning. The paper, “Open Source Software And Crowdsourcing For Energy Analysis”, co-authored by nine experts on energy decision-making, examines how Open Data and so-called “crowdsourcing” – the out-sourcing of tasks to a distributed group of people – can assist developing countries.
Whereas the general focus of this document is on crowd sourcing as a way to make more out of available data, REEEP has highlighted the Open Data concept, and how it is relevant especially in the clean energy context.
Governmental acceptance and adoption of open data has been growing rapidly with examples ranging from the US and the UK, to Kenya and Ghana, and this is proofing the usefulness and increased acceptance of the Open Data movement.
Ultimately the paper argues that open modeling efforts can improve the utility and accessibility of energy models, and also lower the cost of data collection and management. Capacity building and education are other sectors that can benefit considerably from an open approach to information.
“Applying these innovative tools and methods into energy sector analytics will considerably help the job of policy-makers and investors. It will also require ongoing international support” said Morgan Bazilian, the paper’s lead author.
In this light, the conclusion stressed that “finally, the storage and maintenance of publically accessible datasets, software tools, and training materials require a long-term funding mechanism. This presents an important opportunity for the international community – especially in relation to developing countries”
For REEEP the chance to contribute to this effort is important is several ways, one of them being an opportunity to present to a wider audience the importance of utilizing modern technologies to bring about the necessary change in our energy generation and consumption.
